THE PROJECT:

DEPARTMENT OF HISTORICAL
MEMORY

In 2019, the Miranda de Ebro City Council created the Department of Historical Memory. This initiative arises from municipal interest in highlighting the significance of the city in this issue.

Miranda de Ebro was one of the centres of population which most suffered the outrages of the rebel side during the Civil War and the postwar years. Its excellent geographical situation meant that a Concentration Camp was built in the city; the camp was active between 1937 and 1947, and it was the last camp to close in Spain. Thousands of people of many and varied nationalities passed through the camp.

The Department of Historical Memory is working on various projects, among which is the initiative that we are presenting here: the creation of a website devoted to Historical Memory.

This is a question of historical memory, of justice and of reparation. We learn from history, and we can continue to build and strengthen our democracy, which is why it is important to uncover history and recover it.

A great deal has been written about the Civil War, but little has been written about the suffering, the executions by firing squads, the prisons, and the concentration camps, the work camps and the penal camps.

We intend for this website to be a platform for meeting, for the exchange of information, for the increase in number of documents and testimonies, for recognition of all those people who fought for freedom and who were imprisoned, pursued and executed by firing squad because of their political beliefs.

In conclusion, we want this website to contribute to greater knowledge of the least well-known periods of the recent history of this country.
